How do You Stay Motivated when Working for a Longterm Plan or Project?

Few years ago, I founded an organization with my friend Peter , who is currently residence in Greece.

Now I was inspired to setup an organization, Famous Gurus which is now known as Tribarn because of the love Peter have for online business.  He fell in love with online business, when he discovered my .com version of this site circa two years ago which was much more of internet business stuffs.

But just like every other average Nigerian Youth, Peter was not able to stay motivated for us to achieve our mission. He rather dropped from my team within few months of no apparent successful growth in terms of earnings. Well I do not blame him.  He has his personal reasons.  But deep in my mind, I know he has expected an overnight riches when we started.

Also, in recent days, I decided to team up with my some of my friend here in Nigeria to build this organization.  But to my utmost surprise, I found out that most of the members are no more motivated as it were initially when I did a call and hunt for intellectual capital.  Perhaps this is one of the main reason that motivated me to writing this article today.

Now how do we stay motivated especially when we are working toward achieving a long term goal?

Over the years, I have found myself entangled in both short and long term projects. I have come to realise from my personal experience that it is sometimes very difficult to find motivation to do things, especially if the result takes long to be seen.

It is not really easy for one to embark on a long term project that is time and money demanding without losing interest.  We are all human.  Whenever we do something without seeing the immediate return, we feel reluctant to continue.

Do we have to quit a project just because we are not able to make something out of it in a very short term? Not really.  That should not be the solution.

The acronym PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens) still applies in this case.  We should not just give up but rather we should keep trying harder.

The Good News

The good news is that there is something we can do to stay motivated especially when we are on a long term project just like my team.

Now what can I do to stay motivated till I actualize my long term plan?

Planning

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans  – John Lennon quotes

If you fail to plan for a short or long term project, then you are planing to fail.  Planning is very important for every  venture we enter in this world.  Proper planning is the stepping stone to success in any short, medium or long term project you may wish to carry out in future.  With out planning, you will fail.

Goal Setting

“People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It’s as simple as that.” – Earl Nightingale

Setting realistic short and long term goal is another thing that will help one to stay motivated in the event of venturing in a long term project.  Goal setting is very important for ever aspect of our life.  If we fail to set goal(s) then we may not know a clear direction of where we are heading for.  Over the years, I have discovered that most African Youths, Nigerian Youths in particular do not set realistic goals, to the detriment of their motivation psyche.   If you goal is to make 10 million naira within a year, do you think it is rational for a same human?  Most Nigerian youths will like to make millions of naira within the shortest possible time.  And this is one of the main reason why most of them are not self-employed. This is why I made in Clear in my book – Internet Business Guide that making money online is not a get rich quick thing.  Most Nigerian youths who have purchased my book will always want to start earning like me forgetting that I have spend over 7 years on the internet in my venture to make money online?

Rome Was Not Built in a Day?

Could you imagine building Rome in a day? Most big business ventures you see today did not just sprout overnight.  Some of them started years back.  But the problem is that we are not good at looking at the history of these great ventures.

Write Down Your Goal

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Planning and goal setting is central to every aspect of your life. What do you want from your web enterprise? What is the goal? Bundles of guineas? Loads of cash? If your goal is loads of cash, you’ll never achieve that because it is something you cannot visualize. Money is only a means of achieving something. So what is this “something” you really want? Visualize it and you’ll get it!

To Do:

  • Set a goal
  • Write down a plan of action
  • Keep a diary or daily task-list and stick to it

Now that you keep a task-list you will see you don’t waste your time. This will make you feel good. But there is something that can make you feel even better.

Don’t be ashamed to mimic (copy) other people. Look for successful and famous people and see how they have achieved their goals. Gather their quotes, write them down (on real sheets of paper) and keep the quotes on your desk. Each time you feel low, look at the sheets and you’ll feel the power. You can also make a screen wallpaper with your famous person’s photo and some quotes. Then each time you start up your computer, it will give you a boost.

Look for really strong people, somebody who has beaten all the odds and emerged a winner. For example, my power-people are Sir Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln! They are beacons of light and progress! But the quote that gets me started in the bad days comes from Andy Williams. In case you’re wondering, he’s the greatest singer ever (after Frankie, that is). He said: “The only thing that matters is what you do with your time”.

If you waste your time, you waste your life, and you only got one, so, pull yourself together!!! Now, what gets you going?
